Do you know the top reason that business owners ignore the power of email marketing?
Because they think that they don’t have a list of subscribers to send their message too. They think it takes too long to build a list and is just not worth the time investment.
Those business owners are wrong… don’t be like those business owners!
You have a strong list of subscribers just waiting to hear from you right at your fingertips. Want to know who they are?
Who Should Your Market Be?
You don’t want to fill your list with a random collection of people. In order for email marketing to be effective, you need to have a list of quality subscribers that are interested in what you are offering. They may not be people that buy from you every single month, but if they see the value in your service, then they also have the ability to refer your business to the people they know.
Don’t fall into the trap of adding everyone you have ever met to your list to bump up numbers. It is better to have a smaller list of quality subscribers, than it is to have a list that you get no engagement from. Take Tina who is a client in the travel industry, she booked 2 months worth of work in 1 weekend off the back of one emails, and she only has a list of 200 subscribers!
Attract those that you can serve well through your business, that need your offerings, and most importantly, those that have the means to pay you.
How Do You Find Them?
The best place to start is to tackle the people that you know. But the right kind of people you know. Instead of targeting your neighbour’s cousin’s friend who you met at a BBQ one time, try looking closer to your business.
Past Clients: They have worked with you in the past and know your high standards so they should be easy to convert again. They may simply need reminding of how you can help them. You can pull a list of those you have worked with from your accounting system, both Xero and MYOB have accessible records.
Present Clients: Again, they know your quality of work and trust your services already. Even though they are currently using your business, you may still be able to upsell them, or have them refer their contacts. Access this information from your client records management system (CRM).
Prospective Clients: Got some people you know who would benefit from your services and have shown interest? Then these are certainly the people you want to target and bring onto your list. These are the people that are already in your inbox, or leads that you have attracted from your website.
Connections: If you start networking, you will meet a bunch of new people that are great connections for your business. They might not be needing your services themselves, but they might have a complementary business for cross promotion, or share the same audience as you. Put that collection of business cards from people you have connected with to good use!
Circle Of Influence: These are all of the professional people in your life that have the power to influence others by referring your services – your accountant, bookkeeper, Virtual Assistant, banker, lawyer, financial advisor, or anyone else you have a business relationship with.
With these five groups covered off, you will have the makings of a pretty decent list!
But after you have added everyone that you know, what do you do then?
Attracting New People To Your Market
Once you have began your list with your current contacts, you don’t want to stop there. There are thousands of people out there in the big wide world that could benefit from what your business offers. But, unless you put your business in front of them, they will be blissfully unaware that your solution exists for them.
Now it is time to make them aware of the unique value your business can offer them. What problems you solve, what solutions you provide, and why they should choose your business over a competitors. All of this is wrapped up in your Unique Value Proposition.
To do that, you need a list of people to market to.
