IT Is Changing Quickly, Are You Moving Too

When most every home in New Zealand had been connected to electricity and owned a valve radio, the older generation could be heard tut-tutting. “You know it will be the end of the family conversation, parlour games and sing-songs around the piano, mark my words.”

Eighty years later, how much more alarmed would they be to see us working online, mysteriously communicating with people all around the world by some invisible force?

Working, communicating and trading globally (and safely) takes a whole new set of skills. Unless you attempt to turn back time and grow a full beard and put your hair in a bun.. (oh wait, the men do that now…) then you’ve really got to get with the programme and upskill to using social media, online forums, podcasts and yes even educating yourself about Bitcoin.

Short of a solar flare or World War Three and the world’s electrical power supplies being blotted out overnight; the Internet and social media are here to stay.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) takes over mundane and repetitive tasks,  people are exiting factories and finding a new way of earning a living. Millions of people are working from home now in their virtual office, saving their employers money and office space, while those set free of the big corporations are busy trading/working online via the internet.  They are keen to connect and sell their wares and services to a global community via the internet.

Effective Social Media Marketing can help scale businesses regardless of size.It does require marketing to your right audience. It requires a business owner or entrepreneur to dedicate time to learn how social media works.

While the fundamentals of social media are similar regardless of your intentions, different businesses will have to alter their strategies to capture the attention of their target audience.

A Google search on “How to use social media” for example will help provide focus on your specific goals and objectives. Social media communicates with potential clients and provides them with valuable information. A business can discover supporters of their brand to hopefully convert into sales.Posting consistently on social media enables you to engage with your audience, hoping they will repost your internet posts through other sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Instantly a global audience has been reached.

Progress has been exponential in IT. It’s been barely 200 years from the first Heidelberg “high-speed” printing press to the first floppy-disc computers. Now information is entered and processed immediately through voice recognition software on a device held in the palm of your hand…

A measure of the speed of change is in the uptake and usefulness of the mobile phone. Every key- entry function was once the domain of a desktop computer with a massive hard drive and a very chunky desk-dominating monitor that took up half an office desk. Now we use a thin, flat detachable screen to type directly onto or handwrite on with a stylus.

For some, buying their first cell phone was the first introduction to a mini computer. Now everyone is at least a little computer literate. With a modern Smartphone or a laptop the size of a small breakfast cereal box weighing less than 1.5 kg, you’re connected to the world.

A stylish wristwatch has become a mini cell phone, your health, sleep and exercise is monitored by a Fitbit wristband and the science of biometrics introduces facial and body recognition software for security,  identifying you anywhere you go.

Global security has become a major issue. Dubai airport, for example, serves 90 airlines operating more than 7,700 weekly flights to more than 240 destinations across six continents and saw 89 million passengers in 2017. Passengers walk through a tunnel formed of LED screens showing colourful tropical fish swimming. By the time passengers reach the end of the tunnel, their biometrics or individual physical features have been matched to their passport digital profile. They are computer checked in seconds, either receiving a  “Have a nice trip” or a red alert if a security officer is required.

IT is taking us to Orwellian heights while Bitcoin heralds the emergence of a new world currency based on IT and computer code.

Olympic Sponsorship

Toyota New Zealand had a partnership with the  New Zealand Olympic  Committee and Paralympics New Zealand for the next eight years.  This partnership opens the way for our New Zealand Athletes to be supported by the Toyota family on their journey to the Olympic Games.

Tasman Toyota is proud to announce their Sponsorship of one of NZ’s most successful surfers “Paige Hareb”.  For us, this particular sponsorship is special because Paige is born and bred in the Naki.  Tasman Toyota has always been committed and supportive of our local community.  Tasman Toyota is supplying Paige with the new model C-HR crossover SUV to assist in her preparations for training whilst she is home.  Paige’s schedule is hectic and she probably spends more time away from home due to training and qualifying meets.  You can check out Paige’s blog and facebook page which she keeps updated with her activities.

Here are a few words from Paige:

“The last few years have been a bit stressful for me trying to make the Womens’ World surf Tour (top 17 Women in the World). With surfing being named in the Olympics for Tokyo 2020 it has been a huge boost for the sport of surfing in New Zealand and the World. It’s also now one of my main goals to represent New Zealand and Toyota at the Olympics and
hopefully bring home a medal! I’m thankful Toyota ‘believe’ in me and are getting me from the surf to the gym and back again. I’m really enjoying the C-HR and all its features!”

Tasman Toyota wishes Paige all the best in her preparations for the Womens’ World Surf League Tour for 2018 (only the top 17 Women in the World) competing for the World title.

We are 100% behind her journey to the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Digital Marketing: 3 Crucial Advantages Over Traditional Channels

Once upon a time, print forms of advertising were pretty much the only avenues available to a business to market its products. It could be an advert in the local paper, an entry in Yellow Pages or a billboard poster. But if you find yourself feeling nostalgic for the good old days when you could let your fingers do the walking, then it’s time to think again. You see, traditional forms of advertising may still have a place, but the advantages of online channels mean that you can no longer afford to ignore the possibilities. In this article we look at three important ways digital marketing has the edge over traditional forms of advertising.

Easy Access To Consumers

With the level of smartphone ownership in New Zealand set to reach 90% next year, there’s no doubting the incredible reach of online avenues. Unlike traditional advertising, digital platforms mean that you can access consumers in a variety of situations – at work, on the go or relaxing at home.

What’s more, platforms such as Google AdWords and Facebook Ads allow you to tailor your campaign to focus on a specific demographic. Alternatively, you can target your advertising by honing in on key words and phrases. It’s a very powerful tool, not only because of its easy access to consumers, but also because of the degree of control you have over selecting an audience. The ability to maximise your return on investment is, therefore, pretty much guaranteed.

Ability To Measure And Track Performance

Digital marketing enables you to get more bang for your buck. Unlike traditional advertising, online platforms allow you to easily track the performance of your campaign whether it’s by spend, number of clicks and website visits, or conversions. And all the results are presented in a very visual and engaging graph format which makes it easy to understand and compare the results.

What’s more, you can tweak the campaign in response to the results. And so, if you find that advertising on Instagram, isn’t as lucrative as say Facebook, you can very quickly and easily divert your resources. And if a key word isn’t the hit that you were expecting, then it’s a simple process to change the parameters in AdWords.

This ability to measure and track progress is unmatched in traditional forms of advertising and so it’s much easier to ensure you get a good return on investment with online platforms.

Worldwide Reach

It’s certainly called the worldwide web for a reason! And the truth is compared to traditional advertising, the reach of online platforms is almost without bounds. We’ve all heard about tweets going viral and when it comes to the power of word of mouth and personal referrals, online platforms are unbeatable. Everyone has seen those videos on Facebook that somehow seem to capture the popular imagination and within a matter of hours have been shared many thousands or even millions of times. It’s incredible really. And with so many people surfing the web or checking into social media several times a day, digital marketing is quite simply impossible to avoid.

And so, if you want to find out more about how digital marketing could make a huge difference to your business, then get in touch with us here at Devitise. We know how to make the most of online advertising so that your business achieves more for less. Get in touch today and explore the possibilities.

The Unusual Case Of A Transport Business That Owns No Trucks!

Is it possible to run a transport business without owning any trucks? Yes, it certainly is as we have recently helped just such a business. Is it possible though to raise funding when you’re a transport company that doesn’t own any trucks? Well, the short answer is that it’s very difficult. In this article, we look at this unusual case and how Lock Finance was able to help when traditional banks and financiers were not interested.

The Problem

This transport company leases trucks and then carries out jobs on behalf of their clients. It will come as no surprise to learn that the business found it very difficult to raise funding when it had no fixed assets that a traditional bank or finance company could secure an overdraft against. This business model also made it hard for the company to create equity in the business.  And because this transport company leases trucks, they had large monthly lease commitments which they sometimes found hard to meet, especially if their debtors were late in paying.

The Solution

Having exhausted the traditional avenues of mainstream banks and finance companies, the company’s adviser suggested that they talk to us here at Lock Finance. And whilst the business didn’t have any fixed assets, what they did have was a very good debtors ledger. And so we were able to provide a Debtor Finance Facility which allowed then to secure weekly funding. As a result the company now has sufficient funding to ensure they meet their weekly wage bill and their monthly lease commitments. In fact, the facility is working really well and client is very happy as that particular headache has now been resolved.

Lock Finance: More Flexible Options

Here at Lock Finance we provide more flexible options than traditional avenues which may well suit businesses and companies that like this transport entity with no trucks, operate outside standard business models. And so if your business has none of the traditional bank security available such as property security or fixed assets, then remember that there are other options available. Just like this company has done, it is possible to arrange a very successful working capital facility based purely on receivables, which will see you achieving your business goals.

Get in touch with Lock Finance on freephone 0800 275 5625 or complete the online form if you would like to explore the possibilities and see just how we can help your business.

Get Ready For Christmas And The Summer Break Now!

The Christmas holidays are just round the corner and hail the start of the summer break. Now for retailers, hospitality and tourism businesses this is often the busiest time of year, whilst many service businesses seize the opportunity to close down for a few weeks and take advantage of the finer weather to enjoy some rest and relaxation. Whatever the case may be for your business, one thing for certain is that the Inland Revenue only closes for the minimum period over Christmas. And so while you may be busy making plans for Christmas and the summer, don’t forget to get your tax returns into us here at Cleaver Partners on time.

Tax Returns Are Still Due!

Regardless of the fact that most of the country will be winding down as Christmas approaches, your tax returns still need to be filed and tax payments made on time, although there may be different due dates than those that apply in other months of the year. What’s more, there can also be tight timeframes for responding to notices Inland Revenue issues during this period.

Cleaver Partners Christmas Break

We too are planning to take some time off over Christmas. The office will be closed from 21st December through to 15th January 2018. We will be checking emails periodically during the break, but we won’t be available for contact by phone. There will be a skeleton crew returning to work on 8th January, before we open fully on 15th January.

We are, therefore, requesting that all clients prepare and send through their end of year accounts before the Christmas break. That way it’s ready for us to start work on in the New Year and there’s plenty of time to deal with any queries or issues. What’s more, if you don’t get your tax return filed by 31st March 2018, then you may well lose the time extension that is a benefit of being with an Inland Revenue tax agent.

Annual Client Questionnaires Quick Links

To make it as easy as possible, we have developed Annual Client Questionnaires to assist you in providing all the information we need to prepare and produce your Financial Statements and Taxation Returns, including Income Tax, GST, PAYE and FBT Returns. These questionnaires are available on our website and by clicking here.

In addition, you can check up on the latest Inland Revenue deadlines here. And if you are closing down or are in super busy mode over the Christmas period, make sure that you have arrangements in place to deal with any Inland Revenue correspondence. If it ends up in a pile waiting for you to get less busy or for your return, you may find the time you had to respond is gone or is significantly shortened.

 Enjoy The Break!

Getting your returns into us as soon as possible will minimise the chances of you receiving a nasty surprise from Inland Revenue. It also means that you can relax and enjoy the festive season knowing that all your tax affairs are in hand.

Get in touch with us here at Cleaver Partners for more information.

Compassion Towards Animals

The question is not, “Can they reason?” nor, “Can they talk?” but rather, “Can they suffer?” – Jeremy Bentham

When we talk about compassion, it’s usually towards other human beings — family, friends, neighbours, co-workers, strangers, people out there in the world, suffering. We talk about empathising and understanding their suffering and wanting to act to ease or end the suffering. We talk about taking action, through kindness, to end the suffering in some way.

But there are some who believe in compassion towards all living things…

Many of us have pets now or have had pets in the past, and we can completely understand compassion towards animals. You wouldn’t want to hurt your beloved pet, would you? Extend that empathy, compassion and kindness to all other animals, including animals raised for food, clothing, or other such uses.

Most people don’t make this connection, because food is seen as food, not a living, feeling creature who might suffer.

Most of us are very removed from this suffering in modern life, as a whole series of steps have to be taken to get the meat (or other product) from the living animal to our plates: raising and slaughtering the animal is done in another part of the world, then the meat is processed, packaged, packed, shipped, chopped, cooked, served, and what have you, depending on the food.

If we could see first-hand the conditions that these animals live in, how they’re treated, what they’re fed, we might feel differently. It’s not just the killing of an animal that causes suffering (although often it’s done in very inhumane ways), but their living conditions from birth to death.

Animals in our society are treated as non-living, non-feeling objects, and yet they aren’t. They suffer, just as we do.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Gandhi
